This sound like a virus called "fakealert" if you can go to msconfig>tools>restore to an earlier date and restore back about a week. Do these steps with internet disconnected and when you reconnect make sure your virus program is updated and do a complete boot scan. (edit) I found all the pics were still there, just converted to hidden files.Go to tools>folders options and click on show hidden files.
