Setting up Dual Monitors?

I would like to set up dual monitors on my computer. My computer has 2 ports in the back so it seems like it should be able to do the job. However, when I plug in the 2nd screen my computer doesn't seem to notice that a new piece of hardware has been added. Any idea as to how I could get this all working?
